US President Donald Trump's punishing tariffs on dozens of economies came in force on Wednesday, April 8, including over 100% in levies against Chinese goods, dramatically ramping up a devastating global trade war. US tariffs on Chinese imports would reach 104%, the White House confirmed on Tuesday, as Washington doubles down on planned action after Beijing vowed a "fight to the end" on levies.

US President Donald Trump had vowed a further 50% tariff on goods from China on Monday if Beijing did not retract upcoming retaliation – and the White House confirmed that Trump will proceed with this action. The new taxes will be on top of the 20% tariffs announced as punishment for fentanyl trafficking and the separate 34% tariffs announced last week, taking the overall added duties this year to 104%.

The whole concept of a president who can make decisions such as tariffs or really anything executive order is bad. Presidential pardons should be abolished.

I would vastly prefer a president who has no idea what is going on and has professionals running things quietly in the background.

I think this is borne our by how bad the US economy was when Reagan was actually running things and how great it was when he was senile (second term) and also how Biden wanted the 2nd (unnecessary) stimulus when he was coherent and how well everything ran his last 2 years when he was incapicitated.

another anon here. Its short term hype, the market has had so much bad news lately so this "less" bad news of pausing tariffs with only 10% tariffs on most countries besides china, means the market rallies. On top of that short sellers have to cover their shorts which pushes it all higher.

Tomorrow, China is going to enact 84% more tariffs on the US. And maybe after that, even more for the 125% that Trump now put on China for their answer.

The market is pricing it in, when the tariff is in. Tomorrow I think its very likely that we'll see more red. Either way, Trump has really schlonged the world economy , and it will have rippling effects throughout the world for the rest of the year I think. Recession is very likely. ANyway I expect it to go lower. Consumer sentiment is quite bad now, and small business sentiment is also lower. ISM is lower, and has been lower even before the tariffs.

So, I would be surprised to see this roar back up to above the all time high. I think this is a dead cat bump before bigger losses. Also we have crossed the bear market line twice now in the SP500, so more losses are probably likely.
