So basically, there are 2 “versions” of it - a convex and concave curve I guess.
In the one:
Low Knowledge/Low Confidence -> med knowledge/high confidence -> high knowledge/low confidence.
This is the one where very uneducated/stupid people and very educated/smart people conclude/believe the same things - albeit for very different reasons - where mid wits are the contrarians who believe themselves highly enlightened from a very abecedarian level of understanding. People at the high end basically start to realize how little they actually know and understand because they have learned enough to realize just how complex it all is whereas people in the middle think they are really smart because they passed the basics (really enamored with themselves due to their bachelors degree).
This one is the more common and hence why it spawns interesting, seemingly paradoxical/contradictory, social commentary.
The other version is
Low knowledge/high confidence -> medium knowledge/low confidence -> high knowledge/high confidence
This is basically the sensible prediction of how it *should* work with stupid people being too stupid to realize they are stupid, mid wits being depressed over how complex it all is, and experts being smugly confident.
It is precisely because the latter is less common than the former that the Dunning-Kruger effect is so interesting and controversial.
Even more so when you look at human intelligence - how we “learn” from instruction (regardless of the validity of the instruction), how we use “academic achievement” a metric for intelligence, the overtly authoritarian structure of school systems, and how we justify socio-political beliefs with a presumption of “intelligence”.
