No, he wasn't an idiot. Marx's dialectical materialism has proven to be an unreliable theory, though. Furthermore, the envisioned "End of History" suggests that historical progression should culminate in a communist utopia. Hegel's philosophy of history accounts for dialectical progress without stipulating an end-utopia in which class conflicts are resolved. Marx's emphasis on a general direction of historical development further strains Hegelian philosophy and verges on the same mistake made by those such as Fukuyama, who infamously argued that we are eclipsing upon the "final stage" of history. There are also people like Samuel Moyn who argued that "civil rights" represents the arbiter of conflict in the utopian sense, which is just absurd.

So, Marx was intelligent, but many of his theories have either been misread or flat-out do not hold true, knowing recent history.

This is such a skewed way of looking at things. The ruling class possesses more wealth and exacts a greater degree of control over the global market economy than at any point in history.

By what merit?

By the same merit that slaves are governed by their masters. Slavery is a necessary part of a hierarchical society. If you believe slavery to be morally reprehensible because it is unjust, then please characterize a social system completely absent of any form of "master-slave dialectic." Upon gaining self-consciousness, humans are encumbered by a struggle for recognition (being recognized by somebody for whom you have recognition).

I disagree with Hegel in the sense that the master-slave dialectic can only serve to bring about a more equal relationship. From the perspective of a social hierarchy, this relationship struggle would simply displace the hierarchy rather than equalize it. Despite this, the phenomenology itself is sound. Every relationship between two or more humans is fundamentally exploitative; that exploitation can be symbiotic but never among equal footing between master and slave.

In conclusion, embrace inequality.
