Not being from the UK i dont know the general attitude people have there as far as "charity" goes but when I was broke as shit in my early 20s I would just go into grocery stores and ask the management if they had anything they would be willing to let me take that was being thrown out. I managed to gather enough food over 2 days typically to last about a week, especially if they where tossing out pasta because of the sell by date which is purely for the companies profit.
