My kid died. All her stuff is apple except one MS laptop. I want to back up her life, but Apple says I need a court order and her apple ID.
Before you ask, she sent her emails in gmail with no apple association. So, I probably hae the rescue email address. I can't even get into her iphone and iwatch.

I'm not asking for anything illegal. I doubt there is an illegal way to get into an icloud account. Just a step-by-step to at least convince apple with incomplete information.

All I know is you should get a court order from your local probate court.
When my wife's mother passed, she was given her Facebook account in the will but we didnt have a passport. Through a lawyer in Probate, we presented FB with an order and they gave us access.
As far as her Apple-ID, its probably her e-mail address. Include all possible e-mail addresses in your request to the probate court

Apple won't honor the court order without the ID. Kind of a catch-22. I appreciate the security, but I shouldn't be expected to wipe out my child's digital history due to good security.

If this is true, you have my sympathy anon. If you're larping, then fuck you. I assume that her gmail account is her Apple ID. That is what she would log into her Apple devices with. I actually had to deal with a very similar situation with a co-worker. Her daughter died in a rock climbing accident. Her Apple ID was the email address of her college, which was a very small school. They ended up getting the dean of that college to reenable her account and reset the password so they could then do a password reset from Apple using that college email account. If you have access to her gmail account you should be able to log into the apple site with that email address. The password may be different for Apple even though the user ID (her gmail address) is the same. You could then try a password reset from the Apple site and see if it will email you a password reset link. If she has 2-factor on and you can't get into her phone you may be fucked though.
Perhaps the first step, before going to Anon Babble to ask, is to contact a lawyer and ask if there's a way to obtain a court order.

Legally, you won't get Apple to allow you access to the device's account. The most you can achieve is to block it.
Illegal means are very difficult and will likely cost you more than a court case (if you pay someone to do it, for example). And be careful, because Apple has one of the most robust encryption systems. If the system is updated and patched, it's almost impossible, and you have to be careful who you hire, because it could be a scam.
In any case, if you have access to the Gmail account, only if that's the account registered with your Apple ID could you reset the password to access the entire Apple ecosystem.
