coming from someone who has actually watched a lot of bollywood movies, I would say they typically look more like the top funnily enough. the lighter skinned ones usually make up the main cast with maybe a slightly dark one or two, but a super dark comic relief character is also very common, and the background characters are generally dark.

Indians are kind of like Americans in that they are several dozen different races under one identity, that frequently mix but maintain distinct reserve populations. Each skin tone you can distinctly identify is a different ethnicity from a geographically distinct part of India.
