Prior to 1913 the federal government ran solely off of its income from tarrifs. Taxes were not codified by congress until 1913. The US chose to take one for the team after WW2 due to Europe's devastated economy.
What made the US a super power was its industry. At the height of WW2. we were producing liberty ships at the rate of about 4 per day. With the removal of the tarrifs the US had and the high tarrifs imposed on the US by other countries. The industry in the US left to produce in other countries that had the high tarrifs. this allowed them to manufacture there cheaper and ship back to the US without having to pay a tarrif penalty.
Now that the US is imposing tarrifs again. industry is starting plans to begging preproducing in the US. Small business application are up over 70%, and 177000 new jobs have already been added. Other countries and companies have pledged trillions in investment in the US.
Over 175 countries have come to the US to negotiate new trade deals. The US is done supporting the rest of the world. it is about FAIR trade, not free trade.
