Is getting a guitar a good pick for a first time instrument? Let's say you have one, how do you start playing it...

Yeah, get one with nylon chords so it doesn't hurt your fingers very much.

But ask Anon Babble about learning the instrument. I presume it's easier to just pay a teacher to teach you.

I would say start with an electric the action wont be as high as on an nylon and it really doesn't hurt you don't even need an amp just pick up a cheep one lessons are great if you have the money it really helped me since having someone show me exactly were to put my fingers and stuff but youtubers like marty music are really great all so learning to read tabs is easy af do that first then you can play pretty much anything

Electric is expensive, and amp is required to make interesting output. The whole point of the instrument is being able to make music, so having electric without amp kinda defeats the purpose.

But... It depends on what OP wants. If he's on a budget: classic acoustic guitar nylon strings. If he got the money: guitar and amp

Watch youtube videos..practice..it's all muscle memory....takes a year or so.
You get callous on your fingers...it's GONNA hurt at first(blood) however, it will heal

The point is having callous so that it doesn't hurt when you try to play a chord. Your soft fingers will hurt and it will make it difficult to press the string and make a chord. But after a while, everything will be okay

Why is guitar painful

The strings are thirsty. Give them your blood.

get any guitar that appeals to you, ignore fags like these Find someone who knows how to set one up properly or pay a shop to do it for you. a well set up guitar will be much easier on your fingers and less frustrating to learn on. Even a cheap POS like donner or glarry can be set up to be nicely playable.
If you don't want to pay for lessons, then try one of the many online instructors out there, Justinguitar is the most prominent.

if you have a cheap guitar the action might be too high and it causes it to hurt your fingers more

hence the setup advice

The best instrument to pick as your first instrument is the one you most desire to learn. The hardest part wont be learning the scales, chords, or shapes etc, it will be staying committed to it. Good luck!

I learned a guitar on my own, few tips:
-choose the guitar that appeals to you. Seriously, either acoustic or electric - think with which one you'll look cool
-yousician(app that hears what chords you play and you play along song, great thing at the beggining) and justinguitar(free lessojs step by step)
-how do you start? Use the above or install rocksmith(main reason I kept playing. This game has your favourite songs to play, also you can install custom songs)

He's gonna need an amp

Teacher?
HALLO!
did they qualify?

Yesnt

Good time to learn guitar. Cheap guitars (~$200) are actually not that bad now. Lots of great resources online. Still would recommend in person lessons with if you can afford it. Guitar can be really frustrating at the beginning. Having someone that can see and correct what you are doing wrong will help, especially in the first few months.

you gotta do your time to get good

depends on what you want! if you want to start learning as much as you can about kusic, piano may be the best way to go, as it is pretty linear and covers pretty much the entire range of any music you could hope to play. if you just wanna have fun and show off/play with friends, guitar is the way to go. now what kind of guitar is up to taste. electric will probably give you the easiest time in terms of your finger strength and building calluses, but acoustic is a little more verdatile for playing with others, as you dont need extrernal equipment to play. once you have a guitae i would say instead of learning scales or whatever, find songs you like and look up the chords in them and how to play those chords. to make it even easier get a book of chord diagrams. i taught myself in like middle school that way and never really seemed hard to me. source: music degree and teacher for the last 3 years. best of luck bro!

Probably a keytar is better.

Is getting a guitar a good pick for a first time instrument?

that depends on you and your goals
there's nothing wrong with guitar as a first instrument, but it may be less than ideal depending on what you want to do

Let's say you have one, how do you start playing it?

depends on what you want to play

How do you improve and get better at it?

same way you get to Carnegie Hall

nylon chords

chords aren't made of any particular material
strings are, though
a basic electric guitar is in the same price range as a comparable acoustic guitar, and headphone amps are inexpensive and fine for starting out as a learner

The learning curve when your first start is rough. It takes time to develop calluses, let alone the manual dexterity.

My advice would be to play songs that you LIKE (that aren't insanely complicated) and just go from there. Obviously as a beginner you won't be playing Eruption or Cliffs of Dover, so keep it as simple as you can while still learning something you enjoy. Plenty of resources online + ultimateguitar for tablature.

Beyond that.. practice, practice, practice.

just start doing shit
can get by with headphones if electric for a bit

All I did to learn guitar was Google '[song name] chords]' and click the Ultimate Guitar result. I'd keep looking (sometimes trying different songs) until I found one that had easy chords, like Em, C, G, D (stay away from barre chords for now). Then I Googled how tf you play those chords. There are images on Google Images and tutorials on Youtube for that. Then I just tried over and over until I could play the song in time with the original. Then you can go further and learn more complicated stuff with tutorials and learn tabs and stuff.

trying to post without including the homosexual scat spammer gives me some unpostable nonsense

just start and try fren

it keeps giving me some gay spam notice when trying to post anything non-spamish

Electric is expensive

Are you retarded?

I started at 32 while injured with pretty much your pic rel as starter guitar. Just used YouTube, that's all. Now a couple of years later if you'd have told me some of the things I can play now I would've laughed in your face.

Start with learning note scales. Major, minor, all of it to get the hang of the chords. Then move onto something easy like Mary had a little lamb or something. It takes time and patience. You will feel frustrated and feel like giving up. Push past that and keep on. You'll get it sooner or later. Good luck.

I picked up an electric guitar for the first time in September and have been learning on youtube since; I'm a beginner too.
If going electric here's a few tips
1: Learn something that excites you and brings you back to your guitar. (for me it was easily recognizable riffs like Enter Sandman)
2: Buy a guitar stand and put your guitar in clear sight. When I look at my guitar it makes me want to pick it up.
3: Buy a clip-on guitar tuner ($10 CAD to help you out in the beginning but also when you get more of a feeling try to dabble in tuning your guitar by ear. Try to get the correct note tuned and double check with the tuner. (i am still learning this)
4: Learn basic chords and get comfortable switching between them. Play Hurt by Johnny Cash for some nice sounding slow transitions.

If buying acoustic:
haha nice grampas guitars pfft

oh and have fun bro

I taught myself guitar when I was a kid and I’ve played professionally as my only job for my entire adult life. How you should learn depends on what you desire to do with guitar. Shred electric guitar? Probably run scales and watch YouTube videos and stuff. Acoustic? I taught myself chords first, like how to make Am and G chords and then I played a few songs that were those two chords until I remembered them and then learned Em and C and did songs with those, etc until I knew the things I needed to know. I use chord chart things on that guitar tab website to learn new stuff but mainly now I can just listen to something and play it.

I picked one of these things up last summer.
I started by learning the basic major/minor scales. Practiced until my fingers could dance the dance.
Then slowly started learning how to into the gang signs that are chords.
The key to learning is just playing. A lot. Don't think it really matters what. So long as your fingers are moving and you're enjoying yourself.

Don't fall for the second fiddle meme, get an instrument you can play alone. Trumpet, guitar, piano, and the like.
I have a euphonium and I haven't touched it in more than a decade because I'm too bad to play in a band and I need to be in a band to get good.

I seethe whenever I see someone asking advice on learning guitar because I spent 15 years playing the fucking thing and none of the bands I was in went anywhere. It’s like being a life long smoker with emphysema watching a kid light up a cigarette.

Your fortune: Good Luck

Being in a band isn't the be all end all of guitar playing, fam.
You can, like myself, just jam solo for your own enjoyment.
Less resentment and misery at the end of the day.

Been playing on and off for about 20 years. It can be very difficult in the beginning because your hands will have to learn to do things they've never done before. Also, some music is very challenging to play and a beginner isn't likely to understand that by listening so you may get very discouraged. With regular practice you should be fairly competent after a year or so.
