Goods from overseas, manufactured in countries with little to no worker safety or environmental regulations can be produced much more cheaply, and the result is fewer manufacturing jobs in the US.
Tariffs are a way to prevent that from happening.
In the 1990s, the democrat party dumped the unions in favor of Wall St money. Previous to Clinton, democrat politicians needed money from unions to run a campaign, and if they couldn't get union endorsements, they weren't usually able to win a primary. Clinton changed all that by getting big money donations from billionaires and international corporations, making the unions basically irrelevant in democrat politics.
Since that time, democrats have cared less and less about working class needs or desires, and have gone all in for big business and the billionaire class, becoming intertwined with big business and the managerial class, and only ever giving lip service to the working class every 4 years.
Now, here you democrats are, sperging out over measures to protect working class jobs and crying over big business profits.

Tariffs are a flat tax paid on entry. You would also need to source all materials in the US to avoid it. Something could be 100% "made in the usa" and still use imported materials like copper and cotton. This is especially devastating in certain industries like automotive because the way the supply chain is set up it can require crossing the border to and from Mexico or Canada 4, 5, 6+ times. This is why tariffs always get passed on to the consumer.

So it not only makes imports more expensive, it will make domestic goods cost more as well as it's more expensive to acquire necessary materials that aren't able to be sourced domestically or having to spend more on the domestic goods than the imported ones. Either way the cost gets passed onto the consumer.

I live in one. All the elections are pretty much predetermined. The districts are Gerrymandered to such an extent that nothing is ever up for grabs. This district always has a republican rep, the senators are always democrat, and every state level job is democrat.

They're either leftists shit that'll be implemented anyways, or something the democrats don't like, that if passed, they'll immediately have a democrat PAC or organization sue, judge will put it on hold until the trial, and the state attorney general won't defend it so that it loses by default.
The democrats pushed through some "reforms" about 20 years ago, one of which making the minority party completely powerless on budget decisions-- what used to require a 2/3rds vote now just requires a simple majority, so Republicans have zero power, except in a few local governments and districts.
So, as I said, no one bothers to campaign here.
